As we all get older, health and mobility are the keys to staying independent. Now Blue Shield of California has come up with four new Medicare plans to help maintain both: Blue Shield Inspire HMO, Blue Shield Inspire HMO D-SNP, Blue Shield Inspire PPO, and Medicare Supplement Plan G Inspire. All combine essential medical coverage with a Classic AAA Membership.

"We are excited to team up with AAA Northern California to bring important products and services to our Medicare Supplement Plan G Inspire and Medicare Advantage plan members as we continually strive to support them in their health and well-being—and that includes helping them live vibrant, independent lives while giving them tools to stay safe on the road," said Krista Bowers, general manager and vice president of Medicare for Blue Shield of California. "This collaboration exemplifies our mission as a nonprofit health plan to create a personal, high-quality experience for our most vulnerable members."

Blue Shield's new Medicare Supplement Plan G Inspire will provide all the benefits of Medicare Supplement Plan G plus additional health services such as an allowance for over-the-counter medical supplies and reimbursements for vision care and hearing aids. The Silver Sneakers fitness and wellness program covers gym memberships. All told, if fully utilized, Plan G Inspire has the potential to offer enrollees more than $2,000 in added benefits.1

All eligible Medicare Supplement Plan G Inspire members will also have access to a new benefit: Independence and Safe Mobility with AAA. (Blue Shield Inspire Medicare Advantage members must have one or more qualifying chronic conditions to receive the Special Supplemental Benefit for the Chronically Ill, or SSBCI.) That means they can get all the benefits of a Classic AAA Membership, including 24/7 roadside assistance, and enjoy the use of educational tools and resources that promote safer driving, such as AAA's Roadwise Driver (an online course designed to help sharpen driving skills and promote safe habits).

"Membership with AAA opens the doors to so many exclusive services and benefits, including America's most-recommended roadside assistance program," says Rolando Flores, vice president of membership marketing at AAA. "Adding AAA benefits to Blue Shield Medicare Inspire plans will help senior drivers stay independently mobile for as long as possible and as safely as possible."

If you live in Northern California and reside in the coverage area, you could be eligible for these new Blue Shield Inspire plans. Medicare's annual election period is October 15 to December 7, 2020.2 (Blue Shield Inspire Medicare Advantage plans that include the SSBCI vary by plan type, benefits, and service area.) If you are a Medicare beneficiary, you can apply for a Medicare Supplement plan at any time. 1. Based on Blue Shield of California's 2020 actuarial estimate of extra benefits. 2. Blue Shield Inspire's SSBCI requires eligibility determination. You must meet one or more qualifying chronic conditions to receive this benefit. To determine eligibility for the SSBCI, Blue Shield Inspire members whose effective date of enrollment in the plan is January 1, 2021, or later must complete an Attestation Form and submit it to the plan. For members whose effective date of enrollment in Blue Shield Inspire is prior to January 1, 2021, Blue Shield will review member data to determine eligibility and will notify members of their eligibility. Please see the plan evidence of coverage for additional details.
